Student representatives honored; students to lead next year's policy work

The Easthampton School Committee on Aug. (regular session) announced Excellence in Student Representation Awards to Henry Vaganah, Jess Atkins Barber and Walter Baker for their contributions to district policy and committee work. "You brought your voices, your perspectives...you have already established yourself as true leaders," Superintendent Dr. Balch said, praising the three students for their role in shaping district conversations.
Committee members took turns thanking the students for their time and engagement. Committee member Megan Harvey told the student reps, "So thank you...it really is the reason that we're all here," while Chair Laura Scott said the students had shown "poise and maturity" across an intense year. The committee confirmed Jess and Walter will continue their service in the coming year and appointed them to help lead student-centered policy conversations, with the first task likely to be discussion of the high school's cell-phone policy. The committee arranged certificates and photos for the honored students and requested Henry join a September meeting to be recognized in person.
