CFO: Budget plan trims hundreds of FTE; district added some special‑ed staff amid reductions

Michelle Scott walked the board through staffing numbers and the mechanics of full‑time equivalents (FTE). She explained the previously approved reduction‑in‑force (RIF) numbers and that the accounting view (FTE) does not always map one‑to‑one to individual employees. “Those are the numbers that the board approved for us to do a reduction in force in order to meet the new needs of the new budget going into the next fiscal year,” Scott said.
Scott said while the district reduced positions overall it also added staff to serve students with greater needs: “So there was several positions that were added… 3 teachers and 15 para educators were added.” Board members asked for clarification on whether the FTE figures referred to people or to FTE accounting units; staff responded that attrition, rehiring and part‑year contracts affect final headcount.
Why it matters: The staffing changes affect classroom coverage, special‑education services and operations; Scott said the district will attempt to manage timing so critical positions can be filled where necessary but cautioned that some classes may start with substitutes as enrollment is confirmed on count day (the fourth school day in September).
