New Berlin Fire Chief flags rising call volumes, equipment needs and requests conference travel funding

Fire Chief Jared Hanslemaier told the board that the New Berlin Fire Department logged six calls in September and noted 119 calls in the 2024 calendar year while reporting the department is on track for more calls this year and increased mutual aid. Chief Hanslemaier said hydraulic tools are being serviced on Oct. 15 and that the department will present fire prevention programming at the school on Oct. 15 in partnership with South New Berlin and the Town of Pittsfield.
The chief also outlined an equipment and training need tied to a county radio upgrade program in which new devices will be provided on a trade-in basis; he cautioned that replacement batteries are more expensive and sensitive and would require officer-level custodial care. The department requested the Village cover registration and travel costs to send about three officers (potentially four) to a conference in Indianapolis in April 2026; other conference costs would be covered by internal fire department funds and would likely require budget adjustments.
