Commission approves variance for boat cover to protect 1928 Hacker craft

The Lake George Park Commission voted Aug. 27 to approve a zoning setback variance allowing Joseph (Joe) McMahon to install a 36-foot-long, 12-foot-wide, 10-foot-high canvas cover over his boat slip and historic 1928 Hacker craft. Commissioners said staff review and a site visit showed the proposed structure would not alter the essential character of the area or harm park resources.
McMahon, identified in the application as the property owner, told the commission the cover is intended to preserve the original vessel and make it manageable for older owners: “We have a 1928 original hacker craft, not a remake... we feel... we to preserve it and keep it forever,” he said. He provided letters from adjacent neighbors in support. Staff noted the original dock was approved in 1987 and that setback regulations changed from 10 feet to 20 feet since then.
Commissioners read the resolution (application DWM2430100) and found the project categorically a Type 2 action under 6 NYCRR 645.3.6 and SEQRA 6 NYCRR 617.5, concluding it will have no adverse impact on public health, safety or park resources. The motion to approve was made, seconded and carried by voice vote.
The commission’s approval includes the record of the project review committee’s recommendation and routine condition that the approval does not relieve the applicant of obligations to comply with other federal, state or local laws.
