ROE highlights school safety training, preschool expansion and Attendance Matters initiative

Chris, representing the Regional Office of Education, told the committee the ROE is staffed and ready for the school year, has grown staffing from 42 to 87 employees over six years, and is pursuing state and federal grants to support students and districts. He described school safety training with the Illinois Law Enforcement Institute and distribution of more than 600 backpacks through a supply closet program.
Chris also said preschool expansion continues—he reported 40 students enrolled at one location with additional openings elsewhere—and that the ROE's Attendance Matters initiative will coordinate truancy services and community incentives. He noted a legislative change allowing mentors to work with kindergarten through third grade, expanding previous support for grades four through 12.
