Park Commission approves July 11 fireworks permit; beer garden to sponsor

Parks staff (speaker 9) asked the commission to approve a fireworks display at Lake Andrea on July 11, 2026, sponsored by the Lake Andrea Beer Garden with John Ziemba identified as the principal sponsor. "John Ziemba will be paying for the full cost of the fireworks," staff said, and noted the event will require a permit the commission can hold under village ordinance and state statute.
The fire chief (speaker 4) reviewed safety expectations and said the village has not hosted a large waterfront fireworks event in more than two decades, but that industry and NFPA guidelines provide clear requirements for pyrotechnic providers. "It's probably been at least 25 plus years since the village has had or hosted a fireworks event at the lake," the chief said. Commissioners discussed launch location (potentially on the north side or from a barge on the lake), traffic-control plans for Highway 165 and 88th Avenue, cancellation/back-up-date options, insurance and cleanup responsibilities.
Two separate motions were moved and seconded: (1) approval for the Park Commission to enter into an agreement with Lake Andrea Beer Garden and Wolverine Fireworks to allow the fireworks display on 07/11/2026; and (2) approval for the Park Commission to serve as the permit holder. Both motions passed on voice votes with no recorded opposition.
Staff said event logistics remain in final planning (traffic control, coordination with police and fire, insurance requirements and a cleanup plan), and that they would return to the village as required to finalize the permit and operational details.
