Nederland proclaims Aug. 17 United Way Day as nonprofit marks 100 years

Mayor Jeffrey P. Darby read a proclamation recognizing the United Way of Mid and South Jefferson County’s centennial and designated Aug. 17, 2026 as United Way Day in Nederland.
Janie Johnson, CEO of United Way Mid and South Jefferson County, thanked the council and described the organization’s local work, noting that in the past year one initiative placed nearly 37,000 books in area homes. She said United Way now runs 17 initiatives in the region that focus on early literacy, food security, workforce readiness and household stability.
The council presented the proclamation and invited any representatives from the United Way to speak; Johnson thanked the city for the recognition and praised local nonprofit collaboration.
