Council authorizes power to police storage shed and adopts Axon cloud body camera system

Preston Police Chief Dan McCammon told the council the department needs power run to the rear storage shed behind the main office to support an MRAP vehicle, a donated ambulance and battery tenders. "The purpose of having power to the building is to maintain battery tenders, lighting, off‑grid readiness, and avoid frequent battery replacements," McCammon said. Council authorized the work to proceed within budget.
Chief McCammon also explained the department's current WatchGuard software support will end and recommended shifting to cloud‑based storage. He said he "prefers the bid given by Axon, as well as the fact that the County’s Sheriff department and the prosecuting attorney are adopting the Axon cloud‑based system," arguing that would improve inter‑agency sharing and discovery workflow. The council voted unanimously to proceed with Axon per the quoted bid and authorized the chief to move forward with procurement.
Staff will complete required contract steps and monitor budget compliance as the procurement advances.
