The Sudan Independent School District Board of Trustees voted 5-0 on Aug. 3, 2026, to adopt a proposed 2026-27 tax rate of $0.81260 per $100 of assessed value, made up of $0.70540 for maintenance and operations (M&O) and $0.10720 for interest and sinking (I&S). President Richard Salazar and Superintendent Scott Harrell discussed the rate before the board took the vote and authorized the superintendent to take the steps necessary to file Truth in Taxation notices and hold required hearings.
The board also set a public hearing on the 2026-27 budget and proposed tax rate for Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, at 7:00 a.m.; that motion likewise carried 5-0. Minutes show the meeting was called to order at 7:00 a.m. and adjourned at 7:15 a.m. The record notes an invocation given by Dustin Provence and a benediction by Clay Carr.
The minutes attribute the motion to adopt the rate to President Richard Salazar and record the vote as unanimous, 5-0. The written minutes contain overlapping phrasing about who "made the motion" and who "approved the recommendation" for several items; where the minutes repeat motion language, this article reflects the actions recorded rather than resolving minor internal inconsistencies in wording. No dollar amounts beyond the adopted rate were discussed in the minutes, and the board did not take additional budget votes during the special session.
Superintendent Scott Harrell was authorized to publish Truth in Taxation notices and to hold any hearings required under that process. The board is scheduled to reconvene for the public hearing on Aug. 17, 2026, at 7:00 a.m. at the district administration office.
