Police consider charging storage fees as impounded vehicle backlog grows

Chief of Police Greg Kellogg told the Board that the department seizes vehicles used in crimes and faces difficulties collecting towing charges from owners. Kellogg said LPD is coordinating with the district attorney’s office to seek restitution and that he "would like to start charging fees for the storage of these vehicles." He reported there are currently about 15 vehicles impounded.
Trustees discussed whether the Village should act as a middleman for payments to towing companies; Mayor Gregory Rogers said he would prefer to "cut the Village out as a middleman." No ordinance or fee schedule was adopted at the meeting; Chief Kellogg and staff will follow up with the DA and present options for Board consideration.
