Consultants say 219 Littleton Road project would increase daily water demand by about 21,000 gallons

Tom Mahanna of engineering firm Tighe and Bond presented the water demand study for a proposed 300-unit development at 219 Littleton Road, describing two multi-story buildings totaling roughly 300,000 square feet and retaining the existing historic barn and farmhouse.
Mahanna said estimated average water demand for the project is 28,500 gallons per day with a maximum demand of 57,000 gallons per day, and that the development would require a net increase of about 21,000 gallons per day on the local system. He said the plan calls for two new service lines off the existing 12-inch main and two six-inch mains dedicated to fire protection. "I will add language to the document to include how fire flow demand will be met and the recommendation to increase service line size to 8-inch," Mahanna said.
Commissioner Tim Hall and Superintendent Mark Warren raised concerns about whether the system has adequate supply during irrigation season. Hall asked whether the department's challenge is storage or source; Mahanna responded that he believed source capacity is the more significant issue than storage. Warren said he shared that concern, especially during peak irrigation months.
The study and the consultant's forthcoming revisions will be circulated to the Water Commissioners for further review. No formal vote or permit decision was recorded at the meeting.
