Yurok compact described as a new agreement; counsel speaks after technical difficulties

Matthew Lee described the Yurok submission as a new compact replacing an expiring 1999 compact, allowing up to 349 devices at up to three facilities and containing standard protections (payments to the special distribution fund, worker protections and a tribal labor relations ordinance). "This compact allows for up to 349 devices at up to 3 gaming facilities," Lee said.
Chairman Joseph James experienced a power outage and asked outside legal counsel Sarah Dutch to speak. Dutch told the committee she would convey thanks from the chairman and reiterated that the compact responds to the changed legal landscape after the Chicken Ranch decision and asked for the committee's support when the bill reaches the floor. "As Matt just represented, the compact is really just, it's a new compact for the tribe with their compact expiring at the end of this year," Dutch said.
