Le Roy approves therapy dog program for police to support community and schools

The Village of Le Roy Board unanimously approved a resolution on Dec. 18 authorizing the Le Roy Police Department to obtain a therapy dog to partner with an LPD officer and to create a community therapy-dog program. Chief of Police Greg Kellogg briefed the Board on the concept and said the department had researched acquisition, training and care. "The dog itself is free, but the training lasts a week and that costs money," Kellogg said, adding that ongoing costs could be covered by donations and that the dog would live with a partnering officer.
Trustee William Kettle moved for the resolution approving the therapy dog program; Trustee James Bonacquisti seconded and the motion passed with unanimous aye votes. Mayor Rogers noted potential benefits for the schools and the broader community. Implementation details and funding were discussed in general terms but the minutes do not record a line-item budget for the program.
