Piedmont council unanimously appoints Deepa Sharma as city attorney

The Piedmont City Council voted unanimously on Jan. 5 to appoint Deepa Sharma as the city attorney and to approve related amendments to the city's legal services arrangement with Burke, Williams & Sorensen.
City staff introduced Sharma’s bio and described her year as de facto lead legal counsel under a retainer agreement. During public comment, former city clerk John Tullock urged approval and praised Sharma’s practical legal mind. After brief council discussion emphasizing succession planning and established working relationships, Council Member Long moved the appointment and the motion passed by unanimous voice vote.
Sharma, who has served on Piedmont matters under Burke, Williams & Sorensen, thanked the council and staff. A Burke, Williams & Sorensen representative said the firm and staff had built trust during pandemic-era service and looks forward to continued work with the city.
The appointment formalizes a transition staff said has been underway and positions Sharma to lead the city’s legal work going forward.
