The Norwalk Arts and Cultural Commission voted Aug. 11 to allocate $2,000 for a kickoff cocktail event on the rooftop of 50 Washington Street, chair Mark Allen said, proposing the event in late September with a rain date and light hospitality. "I'm proposing a budget of $2,000," Allen stated during the meeting.
A motion to fund the event was made and seconded; commissioners approved the allocation by roll call. Commissioners who voiced support included Naomi Clark, Steven Rust, Saj Oliver, Melissa Matuska, Janae Sylvester, Nori Gruden, Kevin Huffman and Chair Mark Allen. The chair said he would contact the venue manager on available dates and follow up with a confirmed date and rain date.
Why it matters: the event is intended to publicly launch the commission’s implementation of the Arts & Cultural District and to attract local stakeholders and city leadership. The commission discussed keeping programming modest and using the event to highlight other district projects such as the Eli Avenue mural.
Next steps: staff will confirm available dates with the venue and the mayor’s availability; once a date and rain date are set, the commission will publicize the event and consider including artist displays and mockups at the kickoff.
