The Piedmont City Council on Dec. 15 approved a $344,324 contract amendment to Maguire & Hester for the 2025 pavement rehabilitation project, bringing the overall project budget to approximately $1,854,409. Public Works Director Daniel Gonzales told the council the work covers rehabilitation of 10 roadways (not including Grand Avenue), restriping on 32 roadways, placement of roughly 2,000 tons of hot mix and the installation of 17 accessible ramps.
Gonzales described unanticipated subgrade problems on San Carlos, where pavement thickness was less than expected and base rock was absent; staff identified approximately $42,000 in additional subbase repair. He said the engineer's estimate was about $1.4 million and the low bid came in about $50,000 below that estimate. Gonzales recommended using competitively bid prices from the resurfacing contract and cooperative purchasing where applicable to achieve cost savings; council asked about coring, cooperative bids and the city’s pavement condition index. After discussion, a motion to approve the amendment and authorize change orders up to the approved amount passed unanimously.
