Resident reads petition urging plaque to contextualize Confederate monument

Anthony read the proposed plaque language into the public record and told the Board the petition carried 110 signatures. He asked the Board to appoint a commission to write final language if the Board chose to act. “Erected in the Jim Crow era, this monument does not represent the majority views of the citizens of Buckingham County,” Anthony read, and the petition proposes a plaque that would state in part, "The cause of human enslavement was never just."
The request was made during the public comment period; the Board took the petition and did not take immediate formal action at the July 13 meeting.
