Resident complains assessments rose despite no improvements; board to invite assessor

During the public-comment portion of the July 8 meeting, resident Gerald Spooner said he had pursued a grievance with Town Assessor Ben Goff and remained concerned about a sizable increase in his property assessment despite making no improvements to the property.
Spooner said the Grievance Board lowered his assessment somewhat but that the change did not address his overall concern. He told the board that he "added nothing to his property and his assessment went up a lot," and asked for further explanation.
Councilor Lanita Canavan suggested the assessor prepare an explanatory handout about why assessments are rising; Councilor Stephen Denton Jr. agreed. Supervisor James Monty said the board would invite Assessor Ben Goff to a future meeting to review assessment methodology and provide information to residents.
No formal action or change to assessments occurred at the meeting; the board directed staff to schedule Assessor Goff for a future session to present details and answer resident questions.
