Town of Hunter honors local centenarian Mary Mahoney McGinnis

The Town of Hunter Board on March 25 presented a centenarian certificate recognizing Mary Mahoney McGinnis for a 34-plus year teaching career and extensive volunteer service. Town Historian DeDe Terns-Thorpe said McGinnis taught for more than three decades, volunteered at the food pantry, served on the library board and taught knitting classes.
Supervisor Sean Mahoney thanked DeDe “for putting this idea together and adds this is special for him because Mary McGinnis was his fourth-grade teacher.” Linda Nicholls, who taught alongside McGinnis, told the board she still has ornaments made by students in McGinnis’s classes. Refreshments were arranged and the board publicly recognized McGinnis and her family at the start of the meeting.
