Conservation district proposes riparian buffer plantings along Black Creek; board authorizes site visits

Dorothy Abraham (speaker 6) of the Franklin County Natural Resources Conservation District presented potential riparian-buffer and tree-planting projects on two parcels along Black Creek — one near a gravel pit off Egypt Road and another on a parcel tied to the Bakersfield Fire District. Abraham said the district performed a desktop review and recommended site visits, ideally with Stacy Pomeroy, a river scientist at the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, to ground-truth conditions before applying for state funding.
"What we'd like to do is just get your thoughts on whether it makes sense to explore these, if there would be opportunity to maybe plant trees here," Abraham said, and described likely species (red maple, birch, balsam fir, white pine, willows) and a typical project model: the district applies for state funds, supplies and plants trees, and cares for them for a few years. Committee member (speaker 2) moved that the board support the district in exploring a riparian buffer at the gravel-pit site; Committee member (speaker 5) seconded, and the motion passed by voice vote (4-0). Board members directed staff to provide contact information for a local landowner/commissioner so the district can coordinate visits.
