The Select Board discussed a draft town policy on technology use, email, social media and information security that staff prepared and the town attorney reviewed. The policy’s stated goals included preventing phishing, fraud and protecting data governance.
"A few goals are to prevent phishing attack, fraud, and theft, data governance to ensure data and information is protected," the staff presenter said while explaining the policy’s intent. Board members asked a mix of technical and policy questions: which categories of people would be required to use town email accounts (employees, elected officials, volunteers), whether required accounts would cost the town additional licensing fees, and how disciplinary language (including reimbursement for damages) would apply to elected officials.
Members asked staff to clarify specific language (remove an editorial marker left in the draft), to confirm the likely licensing/cost profile for additional accounts, and to verify which categories of people the policy will apply to before the board considers adoption. The board postponed a final vote and directed staff to consult with the attorney to tighten language before returning the item.
