Board places $15.4 million bond question on Nov. 3 ballot to fund school facility projects

The Litchfield Public School District board voted July 20 to place School District Question 2 on the Nov. 3 ballot, authorizing up to $15,400,000 in general obligation school building bonds to finance a set of capital projects. The resolution lists project scope: construction of a secure entrance and parking lot expansion at the Wagner Education Building; boiler replacement and new fire suppression system; restroom updates; remodeling of locker rooms and ADA accessibility renovations to special education spaces at the High School/Middle School site; mechanical, HVAC and lighting updates across sites; and repairs to the football stadium grandstand.
The resolution directs administration to consult with the Minnesota Department of Education and submit a proposal for the Commissioner's Review and Comment as required by Minnesota Statutes Section 123B.71; the actual holding of the special election for the bond question is contingent upon receipt of that review and comment (positive or unfavorable where statutorily permitted). The ballot language included in the resolution warns: "BY VOTING 'YES' ON THIS BALLOT QUESTION, YOU ARE VOTING FOR A PROPERTY TAX INCREASE." The resolution passed on roll call with five Aye votes from members present.
If voters approve the bond question, the district will be authorized to borrow in the stated maximum amount and proceed with project planning subject to statutory review requirements.
