"It is for a 4 year cycle, so we will be in CEP, meaning free breakfast and free lunch for all students, until 06/30/2028," Dr. Wutak said. She reported the district served 103,602 breakfasts and 237,985 lunches last year — an increase of about 1.94% (roughly 6,500 additional meals) despite declining enrollment.
Board members and staff discussed strategies to raise breakfast participation at the high school, where students often head to lockers or class instead of the cafeteria. The superintendent and staff proposed placing mobile grab-and-go carts at main entrances and offering easy-to-eat items such as granola bars and muffins; the idea, if successful at the high school, could be expanded to the middle school.
Board members asked staff to return with participation percentages and comparative cost information for in‑building and off‑site UPK programs so the district can evaluate the mobile carts’ likely impact.
The board did not take a formal vote on program expansion at the meeting; staff will provide additional data in a forthcoming report.
