Forestry officials report more than 10,000 acres burned under authorized controls; county details outreach

Jackson County forestry and fire-control staff presented their annual report to the commission, detailing controlled burns, landowner assistance and outreach events. A forestry official reported the number of authorized broadcast burns as 1,444 for 48 burns and a total of 10,513 acres burned; the county also reported 3,168 authorized piles and said 53 landowners received fire-line plowing assistance covering approximately 4,535 acres.
Staff highlighted 18 fire-prevention and outreach programs that drew some 3,039 attendees, tree giveaways tied to Arbor Day and a southern-pine-beetle prevention cost-share program that approved 21 landowners for roughly $82,000 in cost-share support. Commissioners asked about the $96-an-hour fee for fire-line plowing and how the county communicates readiness levels and burn bans; staff said the county uses its PIO, Facebook and local radio to push notices and responds to individual citizen requests for spraying or plowing.
