Soil & Water reports grant applications and on-the-ground projects, notes roadside milk-house waste

Colby Petersen presented the Soil & Water report to the Government Operations Committee, outlining ongoing field work and grant activity. Petersen said two grant applications had been submitted—for Seneca Mills and for a salt-storage facility in the Town of Benton—and that materials are arriving for a large gully-repair project on Finger Lakes Land Trust property.
Petersen also described coordination with County Highway crews, reporting that during road ditch cleaning this year highway staff twice discovered milk-house waste entering roadside ditches. After conversations with the farm owners, the material was returned to manure storage pits, which Petersen described as a positive outcomes example of communication between Highway and Soil & Water.
Petersen announced a project-tour with Ontario and Yates County Soil and Waters for Great Lakes Commission-funded projects on Aug. 21 (11 a.m.–4 p.m.), with stops in Canandaigua, Seneca, Geneva and Benton.
