Superintendent urges City of Talent to maintain school resource officer funding

Superintendent Brent Barry told the Phoenix-Talent School Board on May 20 that the City of Talent is considering eliminating the school resource officer (SRO) position from its upcoming budget and urged continued city partnership on school safety funding.
"We heard last week that the City of Talent was thinking of eliminating the SRO position and that the funding will not be in the budget moving forward," Barry said. He said the district contributes significantly to the SRO program and has drafted a letter to the city manager stressing the importance of the position. Barry also said the district asked former SRO Ernie Whiteman, who trains SROs nationally, to speak on the district's behalf.
Barry said the budget committee was meeting that evening and that the next formal step will be a city council adoption of the budget in June. Board members had met with Chief Snook and City Manager Alex Campbell to discuss the issue; the transcript does not record a final city decision.
