District recommends Cengage and National Geographic for secondary social studies; Amplify for elementary

District staff recommended the adoption of new social studies instructional materials for grades 6–12 and described the elementary selections at the April 16 meeting. Kelly Soter, who supported the adoption process for grades 6–12, said teachers piloted multiple options and recommended Cengage and National Geographic for secondary social studies to meet Oregon standards on tribal studies, ethnic studies and genocide/holocaust.
High school social studies teacher Leif Larsen, who piloted several curricula, told the board the process showed how a strong curriculum can save teachers planning time and promote equity in lessons. "Leif learned how helpful it is to have a curriculum as a teacher that he can use to lean on in order to save time on lesson planning, make things more equitable for his students," the board record states.
At the elementary level the district recommended Amplify CKLA and Amplify Caminos. Staff said they chose materials that allow teachers to meet the state's tribal and ethnic studies standards while providing equitable classroom resources. The board discussed the recommendation; no formal adoption vote was recorded at this meeting and staff will bring final adoption items forward as required by board policy.
