Lighthouse Point honors long‑service employees and first responders

The Lighthouse Point City Commission on Jan. 27 recognized a series of long‑service employees and named the city’s 2025 officer, firefighter and employee of the year.
Mayor Van Buskirk opened the recognitions, noting 20 years for Sergeant Jason Caruso, 25 years for driver/engineer Randy, and 35 years for another long‑serving employee. Police Chief Vicaro presented Officer Jack Bendett as the police department’s 2025 Officer of the Year, praising his community policing work and a lifesaving response earlier in the year.
"He administered Narcan which all of our officers carry and saved her life," Vicaro said, describing a fentanyl overdose response that he said illustrated Bendett’s calm and quick actions. Vicaro also credited Bendett with reorganizing the community officer role and strengthening the department’s volunteer program.
Fire Chief Weech named Rescue Supervisor Kyle Fleming Firefighter of the Year, citing Fleming’s state fire officer certification, leadership in updating medical protocols and work to improve pediatric care and narcotics accountability. City staff also recognized Eileen Hughes as employee of the year for her recordkeeping work that supports the criminal investigation division.
The honors drew brief acceptance remarks and thanks to staff and family members who attended. The commission wrapped the recognitions before moving to public comment and regular business.
