Local broker urges commission to revisit beer-board distance rule

A Coldwell Banker affiliate told the Bradley County Commission the county's distance rule for packaged beer sales, unchanged since 2000, is discouraging prospective buyers for a C-2 property in southeast Bradley County and led to a lost contract.
A public commenter identified herself as an affiliate broker with Coldwell Banker Kennard Realty and urged Bradley County commissioners to consider updating the county’s beer-board distance rule for the sale of packaged beer near schools and churches.
“I am here on behalf of, not just the real estate industry but, a seller with a C2 commercially zoned property, located at the corner of Spring Place Road in Southeast Bradley County,” the broker said. She told commissioners the county’s distance restriction has not been amended since 2000 and said the rule has affected interest in the property.
The commenter said growth in southeast Bradley County has increased commercial interest and that one contract was lost because of the current rule: “Unfortunately, we have lost 1 contract due to that beer board rule, and do have other interest at this time pending the the amendment.” She requested commissioners consider the potential benefits of changing the distance requirement to increase market interest in certain parcels.
The chair noted the item is on the table and, under Robert’s Rules of Order, county commissioners cannot discuss it while it is on the table. The public comment did not prompt formal board discussion or immediate action at the meeting.
