Monroe schools outline Custer parent-loop plan to relieve pickup congestion

Superintendent Shaw presented an early-stage plan to build a parent loop at Custer designed to reduce pickup congestion and keep students away from moving traffic. Shaw described a route about 2,200 feet long with a double-lane area near the soccer field and a gated entry that would remain closed at night but open during pickup.
"What we do is this spot right here would be gated... During the day, it would stay open, but there's a gate right here that would stay closed so that when parents show up early... they don't," Shaw said while outlining capacity estimates. Shaw and staff estimated the configuration could handle roughly 200 cars during peak pickup and suggested a 30-by-40 pavilion and fenced playground to manage parent flow and student safety. The superintendent said the district must work with the county on culvert and drainage issues and will return with cost estimates and a progress report at the next meeting.
Board members asked about bus conflicts, drainage and the need to coordinate timing and approvals. Shaw said buses would approach from middle- and high-school areas and that a double-lane driveway and traffic management ("zipper" merging) would be used to prevent congestion near the school entrance.
