County budget includes drawdown to expand north‑side transfer station, purchase backhoe

During the 2027 budget review, County Administrator Darren Myers said the county plans to draw down more than $500,000 from unencumbered balances in the solid‑waste fund to expand the north‑side transfer station and to purchase a replacement backhoe.
Myers explained the increase in the solid‑waste budget is driven by more customers using the landfill; higher revenues increase expenses because the county must haul and process more waste. "But the biggest piece of that, over 500,000 of that is the drawdown from the unencumbered balance to do an expansion to the transfer station up there on the North Side to allow more room, more storage... as well as to purchase and replace a backhoe up there," Myers said.
The administrator described the solid‑waste fund as non‑property‑tax supported, noting revenues are collected from facility users and that increased activity leads to higher operating and hauling costs. Commissioners did not change the proposed capital plan at the meeting; staff will include these items in the budget publication for the Sept. 8 hearing.
