The committee approved a contingent fund appropriation to support an application to the New York Agricultural Land Trust to protect about 131 acres at Ochsner Farms in Newfield.
The member who brought the resolution said the land trust will manage the protected acreage in perpetuity and described the payment as a one-time county contribution to support the land-trust application process. "Ochsner Farms was accepted as a strong applicant," the sponsor said, and the county's payment would go toward the land-trust application and related work.
Legislators asked whether the protected acreage would remain on the tax rolls and whether it would continue to be actively farmed; the sponsor said the farm would continue to be farmed and indicated the county would follow up on the tax-roll question. The resolution passed unanimously.
