Macon arena project seen as opportunity for student training; district negotiating instructional space

The new Macon Arena, which hosts recently begun construction, could provide instructional and job-placement opportunities for Bibb County students if negotiations for land lease space succeed, Superintendent Dr. Dan Sims said.

"Those negotiations continue right now. Nothing is solid in stone, but we're happy to be at the negotiating table as we think about instructional space where potentially pathways could exist," Sims said. He highlighted possible instructional uses — culinary arts, audio-visual and graphics — that would link students directly to internships and jobs tied to arena operations and visiting events.

Sims and hosts argued that the arena is part of a broader strategy to revitalize the city’s economic appeal and to generate revenues for capital projects (the 'East Block' and related 1¢ sales tax were discussed elsewhere in the interview). The superintendent noted that updated facilities make Macon more attractive to businesses and visitors and can create new opportunities for graduation events, tournaments and conventions that also benefit students.

While the district is optimistic about potential partnerships, Sims cautioned the details are subject to negotiation and board approval; he said the district has been granted authority to continue negotiating terms for instructional lease space adjacent to arena planning.
