Resident urges Livingston County to rescind sheriff’s 287(g) agreement with ICE

Holly Ingram of Brighton used the first call to the public to press commissioners to act on the sheriff's 287(g) agreement with ICE, saying the arrangement exposes people of color to deportation and damages the county’s reputation. “There is a real risk that perception becomes reality and that Livingston County becomes known for detaining people of color, causing them to be sent to inhumane detention centers before ultimately being deported,” Ingram said.

Ingram said she does not assert that only people of color are pulled over by law enforcement but argued that the specific risk created by a sheriff–ICE agreement is distinct and terrifying for affected communities. She urged the board to “work with the sheriff's office to rescind the shameful agreement.” No commissioner response or formal action on the agreement occurred during the meeting; the comments were recorded during public comment.
