Commissioners honor late Commissioner Frank Sample; public urges careful appointment

The Livingston County Board of Commissioners opened its Aug. 10 meeting with a moment of silence for the unexpected passing of Commissioner Frank Sample. The chair asked attendees to honor Sample’s “honorable service,” and residents used the public comment period to offer condolences and guidance on selecting his replacement.
Marion Township resident Steve Williams, who said he and Sample were Pinkney natives, praised Sample’s dedication and asked the board to pick a successor who will “keep the public's interest at heart” and be willing to do the extra work the post requires. “I thought he did a great job,” Williams said. Williams suggested the board seek someone who prepares for meetings, engages with constituents and makes the role more than four meetings a month.
The board did not take any formal action on an appointment during the meeting; commissioners heard public input and moved on to scheduled business. The chair closed the public-comment period and proceeded with the evening’s agenda, which included grant and budget votes.
