Colton Equalization Board reduces assessments for multiple properties after appeals

The Colton Equalization Board met March 16, 2026, at Colton City Hall and reviewed 11 property assessment appeals. Mayor Trevor Bunde called the meeting to order at 6:04 p.m., and after hearing owners and reviewing records via the Beacon lookup tool, the board approved reductions on ten parcels and left one assessment unchanged.
"Motion by Evans to reduce land assessment to $15,700.00, seconded by Evans. All aye, motion carried." The reductions included Parcel #021759 (owner Larry Nesheim) lowered to a total assessment of $337,839; Parcel #096479 (Brandon and Kendra VanBlaricome) to $394,200; and multiple parcels owned by Betty Oberg reduced across several lots. The board cited large year-over-year increases — in one case a $125,100 jump — that were not supported by recent improvements or comparable sales.
Finance Officer Dawn Pilker reported staff used the Beacon property lookup and the assessment book during deliberations. Several appeals cited flooding, adjacency to unimproved right-of-way, or zoning/buildability limitations; the board accepted those facts in multiple motions reducing land values. For one appeal by Brandon and Kathleen Puttmann (Parcel #068717) the board found the full-and-true value supported and made no change.
The board closed the equalization process and adjourned at 8:17 p.m. The clerk recorded motions and outcomes for incorporation into Colton's 2026 assessment roll.
