The Colton City Council on March 9 approved GeoTek core sampling and borings to evaluate current and future repair needs for the municipal swimming pool. The work includes four soil borings around the pool perimeter and four core samples through the pool slab to test concrete thickness and compressive strength.
Councilor Matt Wochnick moved to approve the bores and cores; Councilor Julie Lyon seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The GeoTek email in the packet from engineer Shawn Maassen notes the rig cannot fit inside the pool fence, so perimeter borings will be conducted just outside the fence and the cores will provide slab thickness and compressive strength. Maassen provided a preliminary cost estimate: "The cost to do 4 soil borings ... and the associated laboratory testing ... would likely be on the order of $3,000 - $3,300 (before tax)," he wrote.
Maassen cautioned that subsurface findings may limit the amount of soils information that can be obtained and that GeoTek does not perform pool‑patching; any core repairs would require separate work by others. The council approved the scope to inform future repair planning and budgeting.
