Fremont County proclaims August 19 as Richard Baker Day for lifetime aviation service

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners read and unanimously approved a proclamation designating Aug. 19, 2026, as Richard Baker Day in recognition of his lifetime of achievement in aviation. The proclamation, read by the chair, cited Baker’s first solo flight on Oct. 31, 1968; more than five decades of service to Fremont County Airport as pilot, airport manager and consultant; and honors including the Federal Aviation Administration’s Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award and the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award.
Commissioners and several aviation colleagues praised Baker’s mentorship and state-level advocacy for airports. The board moved and seconded the proclamation and approved it by roll call vote. Supporters in the audience, including the airport manager, stood and described Baker as a long‑time mentor to staff. "These are big deals for awards, and the recognition that **** has gotten through these awards probably can't be overstated," one supporter told the board.
