New after-school 'Planet of Life' program for 7th–8th grade girls funded by local grant

The district will run an after-school veterinary science program for 20 seventh- and eighth-grade girls after receiving a Berks County Community Foundation grant funded by Dr. Deborah Patt. The program is free to families, meets monthly beginning in late September, and will include hands-on learning with local partners.
Principal Dr. Maori told the board the Boyertown Young Women in Science program was funded through a Berks County Community Foundation award provided by Dr. Deborah Patt. The program, called "Planet of Life," is aimed at 7th and 8th grade girls in the district who have shown interest in veterinary science.
Dr. Maori said the grant "covers all of the cost of instruction and materials." The program will enroll 20 students (10 from East and 10 from West), meet once a month starting in late September for eight sessions and use Reading Science Center instructors; parents will pick up students at approximately 4:45 p.m. The board was told instructors will have required clearances and that staff and administrators are welcome to observe sessions.
The presenter noted potential program activities could include guest visits from a local bat sanctuary, reptile specialists, and dissections at appropriate grade levels as the curriculum develops. The board thanked the applicant and noted the program fills a gap for girls interested in life and veterinary sciences.
