Acting County Treasurer Megan Fralick and Chief Accountant Jamie Corteville presented three options for addressing prior sales tax distribution errors that resulted in roughly $596,300 in excess disbursements to six towns.
The committee discussed three possible responses: (1) forgo recovery (county absorbs approx. $596,300), (2) require the six affected towns—Arcadia, Huron, Palmyra, Rose, Sodus and Wolcott—to repay the overpayments, or (3) distribute about $1.4 million to the other nine towns to equalize payments. "From the county's perspective, recovering the overpayments was the most appropriate and fiscally responsible option," said Supervisor Scott Johnson. Some supervisors, including Mr. Fantuzzo, cautioned that repayments could strain smaller towns.
After discussion the committee reached a consensus in favor of option two and asked staff to prepare a formal resolution for July that is expected to require repayment by the end of 2027. Ms. Fralick said no resolution was presented at this meeting and that the discussion was informational; the committee's consensus will be memorialized in a formal resolution next month.
