Jackson County veterans office reports casework, $817,656 in benefits paid and schedules suicide-prevention talk

A staff member from the county veterans office told the Jackson County Board of Supervisors that the office handled 59 in-person visits, 108 phone calls and a range of claims and appeals last month, and that 424 veterans and eligible family members received $817,656 in August. "So we have 424 veterans and eligible family members, receiving $817,656 in August," the representative said while outlining caseload figures and open claims the office is managing.
The presenter said the office is working to expand outreach through newspaper articles, social media and face-to-face contacts and noted training provided by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs earlier in the month. The office also publicized a Nov. 17 presentation by Deborah Moller, a suicide-prevention coordinator with the Iowa City health care system, scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Maquoketa/Makokita Library community room. The presenter said the event is open to veterans, family members and the public and framed the session as part of broader efforts to increase awareness of mental-health resources.
