Classroom to Careers pilot rewards Lake Weir Middle with $2,000 for interview skills pitch

District and business partners presented a summary of the Classroom to Careers pilot, which immersed middle- and CTE-teachers in industry workdays (manufacturing, health care and agriculture/equine). Matt McCormick, president of the Chamber and Economic Partnership (CEP), said the program focused on teaching support staff about local career opportunities so they could bring that knowledge back to students.
"The community with the best schools win," McCormick said while summarizing the business partnership behind the pilot and thanking district leaders and sponsors. Program organizers described facility tours, hands-on activities and industry mentors; judges selected Lake Weir Middle School's pitch about practical interview skills as the winner. Lake Weir Middle School received a $2,000 award to implement its pitch at the school.
District staff said the pilot will expand to more sectors and teachers next year and that the program aims to create a pipeline from schools to local employers. Sponsors thanked teachers for participating in week-long immersions that included touring manufacturing lines, labs, and equine operations.
