Ulster County Historian Eddie Moran presented archival research to the Town Board on April 27, outlining that the neighborhood historically known as "Africa Lane" remained a recognized Black community from the mid-1800s into the 20th century. Moran described a 19th-century burial ground located on private property on South Street and proposed two state historic markers to be placed on town property near the sites.
Moran asked the board to allow the markers on town right-of-way near 47 South Street and at the roadside location between Route 9W and South Street. The proposal would place both historic roadside markers on town property to acknowledge the neighborhood and the burial ground; the board did not take immediate formal action on erecting the markers during the workshop.
