Cortez Elementary leaders outline push to hit 88% proficiency, highlight student successes

Two student leaders from Cortez Elementary addressed the Lammersville Joint Unified School District board on March 19, outlining a schoolwide effort to raise academic proficiency and highlighting recent extracurricular successes.
"I pledge I will practice kindness, act responsibly, work and play safely, and show respect at home, at school, and in community each day," said Trisha Chatterjee, the student body president, during the Pledge and opening remarks. Chatterjee and Sanvi Chaudhary, the student vice president, described an intervention block called "OTP" (On the Prowl) that puts students in small groups for targeted instruction. The students said the school has set a target of 88% proficiency on state assessments and is using winter MAP scores to guide supports.
The superintendent later reported districtwide student accomplishments, noting Mountain House High School's DECA program earned two first-place trophies at a state competition and many students qualified for national competition. "We secured, meaning Mountain House High School, 2 1st place trophies for the 1st time ever," the superintendent reported. He also cited strong County Science Olympiad showings and announced a student acceptance to the U.S. Naval Academy.
The board thanked the students for their presentation and invited them to remain for the meeting. The student remarks came during the meeting's opening and were followed by routine business and reports from trustees and staff.
