Wheaton staff recommend Police Station renovations in phased priorities; locker rooms near capacity

Assistant City Manager William Kolschowsky described a three‑priority renovation plan for the Police Station, which was built in 1990. Priority 1 would address exterior brick and limestone repairs, add a training and community room, and renovate the lobby and records area. Priority 2 would add interior remodeling of the evidence room, patrol and administrative areas. Priority 3 would include extensive interior renovations, lounge and fitness improvements and an expanded women’s locker room.

Police Chief Princeton J. Youker told the Council that current locker rooms are near capacity; he said Priority 1 expands the locker room to meet current staff needs while Priority 3 would further expand the women’s locker room for future female sworn officers. Nikki Bridges of Studio G.C. added that increasing the women’s locker room without expanding total station space would encroach on adjacent rooms. Staff recommended advancing schematic design for Priorities 1 and 2 and to return with further analysis as part of the 2027 budget process.
