Sanilac County commissioners authorized a demolition contract for a Brown City home and approved related environmental and asbestos testing on Feb. 17.
The board’s action authorized demolition of a property originally projected for rehabilitation at a cost not to exceed $166,600, to be funded through the county land bank budget and reimbursed by a state land bank grant. County staff were also authorized to have the Sanilac Economic Development Corporation’s executive director sign the necessary contract.
Commissioners then approved environmental and asbestos testing for the same property at a cost not to exceed $3,280, likewise funded through the land bank budget and subject to grant reimbursement. "...you are authorizing and award environmental testing and consulting... It’ll cost not to exceed $3,280," was read into the record, and the motion carried without further discussion.
During discussion a commissioner asked whether leftover funds could support an additional house in town; staff said documentation had been provided and follow-up work was moving forward. The approvals allow the county to proceed with demolition and pre-demolition environmental work so the land bank can clear or redevelop the parcel.
