County replaces firewalls after Transit outage; sheriff, soil & water and dog shelter slated next

Knox County IT told commissioners a Transit firewall failed after a power outage but a preconfigured spare restored service; remaining firewall replacements — including the sheriff's office, soil and water department and the dog shelter — are expected to be completed this month.
During the IT update, Trevor said county staff are nearing completion of a multi-site firewall-replacement program. He reported a Transit firewall died after a power outage and that IT had a spare device nearly ready; a staff member (Jared) deployed it that morning to restore service.
"We had the spare already almost set up and ready to go. So Jared dashed out this morning, and that's what he's working on this morning, a new firewall project," Trevor said.
Trevor listed outstanding firewall replacements for the soil and water department, the dog shelter and the sheriff's office and said those sites ‘‘will probably be completed this month.’’ He also said the county renewed a firewall license for the police department, allowing retirement of an older VPN used by cruiser mobile data terminals and improving how MDTs connect to 911 servers.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about which police unit and which facilities were affected. Staff confirmed the work is county-led and that completion timelines are near-term.
