The Jamaica Select Board discussed safety concerns at the town transfer station and moved to temporarily restrict use of a container that sits under a damaged canopy until the waste hauler corrects placement or repairs the structure.
Chair Jessica Pollock said the town’s hauling costs far exceed fees and noted safety problems at the canopy: “I thought we had all agreed that that canopy is dangerous, and nobody should be anywhere near it,” she said. Board members described a visible gap between the tipping pad and the container that makes hand‑tipping hazardous and urged staff to post signage or close the area while Casella repositions the container.
Tom, the town administrator, said he will contact Casella and seek an expedited visit and replacement. Select board members suggested cones and warning signs immediately to reduce the risk of accidents and to push Casella to act. The board agreed that staff should follow up with a written notice to the company and report back at the next meeting.
The change is an operational, temporary measure: no ordinance or fee change was enacted. The board asked the transfer‑station attendant and public‑works staff to install signage and to notify the public about any temporary closure or restrictions.
