Board votes 6-0 to commission Brent Taney as district police officer
Summary
The Blue Springs R-IV board unanimously approved the appointment of Brent Taney as a district police (DPS) officer; Chief Russell said Taney has more than 27 years of policing experience and will be assigned to Sunny Point Elementary after finishing the FTO program.
President Swanson called for a motion to commission the candidate the board had invited for introduction and recognition.
Chief Russell introduced Brent Taney and said, “Brent has been a police officer for over 27 years.” Russell outlined Taney’s experience in Kansas City — patrol, tactical work, the robbery unit, 10.5 years in homicide and seven years as a bomb and arson tech — and asked the board to authorize Taney as the district’s next DPS officer. Russell added that, upon completion of the field training officer program, Taney would be assigned to Sunny Point Elementary.
President Swanson then sought a formal motion. “I saw Miss Gilstrap move that we approve the authorizing, Brent Taney as a new officer, and I saw Miss Swank second that motion,” Swanson said. With no further discussion, the board voted in favor and Swanson declared, “Motion carries. 6 0.”
The board’s action was procedural authorization to commission Taney; the transcript records the motion, the mover (Miss Gilstrap), the seconder (Miss Swank) and the 6–0 tally. Chief Russell noted Taney’s wife, Rose, was present to pin the badge at the meeting.
