Higley board reviews policy to automatically place qualifying middle-schoolers in advanced math
Summary
On first read the board reviewed policy IHA changes to implement HB 2423: students entering grades 6–8 who demonstrate the highest math proficiency on statewide or benchmark assessments will be automatically enrolled in the next advanced mathematics course unless a parent objects. The district plans to use statewide assessment results for placement and will notify parents of the process and appeal steps.
Marcus Berkshire, executive director of teaching and learning, presented a first read to align the district’s instructional program policy IHA with House Bill 2423 (effective in September). Berkshire summarized the proposed language: “The proposed language states if an advanced mathematics course is available, the district shall enroll a student entering grade 6, 7, or 8 in the next advanced mathematics course for which the student qualifies unless the student's parent objects.”
Berkshire said the district would use statewide assessment results to identify eligible students, notify parents of the purpose and goals of automatic enrollment, and provide instructions for objecting to the placement. Board members asked clarifying questions but did not object to moving forward with the first read; administration will return with materials for a second read and implementation details.
